Framework Laptop 12: Modular Magic, But at What Cost?

Framework’s highly anticipated Laptop 12, their first 12-inch 2-in-1, is finally available for pre-order in the UK, Europe, and Canada. Starting at £499, it’s significantly cheaper than Framework’s previous models, but is it truly an ‘entry-level’ laptop in the current market? Let’s dive in.

The base price, while tempting, doesn’t include essential components like storage, memory, ports, or an operating system. Adding these necessities bumps the price up considerably, bringing it closer to the cost of Framework’s Laptop 13. This means that while the Laptop 12 boasts a lower starting price, the fully functional device ends up costing a good bit more. This price point puts it in direct competition with other similarly specced laptops from established brands, raising the question: what’s the added value?

The answer, as usual with Framework, lies in their commitment to repairability and upgradability. This laptop continues their legacy as the only company consistently delivering on the promise of a fully modular laptop. The ability to upgrade components, even swapping out the motherboard for a different processor generation, offers long-term cost savings and reduces e-waste. This is a compelling argument for environmentally conscious consumers and those who value longevity in their tech.

However, the Laptop 12’s specs aren’t cutting-edge. The base model features a six-core 13th Gen Intel Core i3-1315U processor from 2023, while a more powerful i5 option is available for an extra £150. While these are perfectly capable processors for everyday tasks, they’re not the latest and greatest. Considering comparable laptops with similar specs are available at lower prices, the premium for Framework’s modularity becomes more apparent.

The design itself is a definite highlight, with the colorful and friendly aesthetic seen in previous models continuing here. The 2-in-1 functionality and backflipping touchscreen add to its appeal. However, the pre-built version currently only comes in black, leaving the more vibrant colors to those who opt for the DIY assembly option. A color-matched stylus with a removable battery is also planned for a separate purchase.

US pre-orders have been temporarily delayed due to the impact of tariffs. While Framework hasn’t yet revealed the US pricing, estimated conversions based on the Canadian price point suggest a starting price potentially around $510 USD for the base model and $765 for the pre-built option. Framework has confirmed they’re working on a US launch plan and will provide updates soon.

Shipping is expected to begin in June and July for the DIY and pre-built models, respectively. Ultimately, the Framework Laptop 12 presents a compelling proposition for those who prioritize repairability, upgradability, and sustainability. However, the price premium for these features needs careful consideration, especially when compared to other options in the market.
