Saints QB Derek Carr’s Season in Jeopardy: Shoulder Injury Shakes Up NFL Draft?

The NFL Draft is just around the corner, and a significant injury to veteran quarterback Derek Carr has thrown a wrench into the New Orleans Saints’ plans, and potentially the entire draft landscape.

NFL Network reported that Carr is facing a serious shoulder injury that could sideline him for the entire season. Surgery is reportedly a possibility, leaving the Saints in a precarious position. This news significantly impacts their upcoming draft strategy, potentially pushing them towards selecting a quarterback early.

Carr’s time with the Saints hasn’t been without its challenges. Since joining the team in 2024, he’s missed seven games due to a concussion and a hand fracture. While he’s posted respectable numbers – 68.2% completion rate, 6,023 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 27 games – the injury, combined with his age (34), has likely spurred the Saints to consider their options at the quarterback position.

With the ninth overall pick, the Saints have a prime opportunity to draft a promising young quarterback. Pre-injury, many draft analysts predicted the team would select Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss. However, with Carr’s uncertain status, the possibility of drafting a quarterback like Shedeur Sanders, should he fall to them, becomes significantly more attractive. Spencer Rattler is expected to be the backup, but a more reliable starter would be a huge asset to New Orleans.

The situation is further complicated by Carr’s hefty contract. He signed a four-year, $150 million deal, with $100 million guaranteed. Releasing him would create a significant financial burden for the team. This high-stakes situation makes the upcoming NFL Draft a must-watch event for Saints fans and NFL enthusiasts alike.

The Saints’ season ended with a disappointing 5-12 record, resulting in the mid-season firing of head coach Dennis Allen. The team subsequently hired Kellen Moore, who brings experience as offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, Chargers, and the Super Bowl champion Eagles. Moore’s arrival, coupled with Carr’s injury, sets the stage for a potentially dramatic shift in the Saints’ offensive strategy heading into the new season.
