Gunner Stockton: Georgia’s QB1 Solidifies His Grip

Carson Beck’s transfer to Miami unexpectedly paved the way for Gunner Stockton to become Georgia’s starting quarterback. His ascent wasn’t guaranteed, however. Stockton, a junior, had already stepped up in the College Football Playoff after Beck suffered a season-ending elbow injury. He then successfully fended off a challenge from redshirt freshman Ryan Puglisi during spring practice, culminating in the G-Day scrimmage on Saturday.

Coach Kirby Smart praised Stockton’s improvement, highlighting his increased confidence and understanding of the offense. Senior running back Cash Jones echoed this sentiment, specifically noting Stockton’s enhanced decision-making and reading of defenses. Smart also commended Stockton’s athleticism and ability to extend plays with his legs, a quality he shares with Puglisi.

Stockton’s starting position was cemented when he led the first-team offense in the scrimmage. His performance was impressive: 16 of 34 passes completed for 309 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Linebacker Raylen Wilson expressed his admiration for Stockton’s resilience and unwavering determination, emphasizing his refusal to be discouraged, even under pressure.

While Stockton secured the starting role, Puglisi also made a strong showing, particularly showcasing his arm talent during a series with the first-team offense. Although Smart acknowledged both quarterbacks displayed both strengths and weaknesses, he emphasized the value of the game-like environment and the growth both players experienced. He noted that Puglisi, in his first spring, is still catching up to Stockton in terms of offensive knowledge but is making significant progress.

Stockton’s experience in leading the team in high-stakes games, such as the SEC Championship game overtime win against Texas and the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame, undoubtedly contributed to his current position. He himself acknowledged the shift in his role, emphasizing the heightened leadership responsibilities that come with being the starter.

Looking forward to the next season, the addition of transfer wide receivers Noah Thomas and Zachariah Branch is expected to significantly boost the team’s offensive capabilities. Smart expressed confidence that both Stockton and Puglisi are ready to capitalize on this enhanced receiving corps, addressing a weakness from the previous year.
