Hori, the accessory maker known for its quirky and functional Nintendo Switch peripherals, has unveiled a new camera designed for the Nintendo Switch 2. This isn’t just any camera; it’s remarkably compact, small enough to use comfortably while playing in handheld mode. At a mere two inches tall and weighing only 30 grams, it attaches directly to the Switch 2’s USB-C port without adding significant bulk. This makes it a significant improvement over the bulkier official Nintendo Switch 2 camera.
Currently listed on Amazon Japan for 3,981 yen (approximately $28 USD), this GameChat-compatible camera significantly undercuts the price of Hori’s previous Piranha Plant-themed camera, which retailed for $60. While its availability outside of Japan is currently unconfirmed, the previous Piranha Plant camera’s US release suggests that this smaller, more versatile model may also see a wider launch soon. A June 5th, 2025 release date is currently listed for the Japanese market.
Beyond its portability, the camera offers flexibility in placement. It comes with a weighted base, allowing it to stand alone on a flat surface or even be perched on the top edge of a TV (depending on the TV’s design). This dual functionality makes it adaptable to various gaming setups, whether it’s a handheld session or a larger screen experience.
However, there’s a trade-off. The camera’s resolution is limited to 640×480, a considerable step down from the 1080p offered by Nintendo’s official camera. While the lower resolution might be acceptable for close-up handheld use, video quality could suffer when using the camera further away, such as when it’s placed beside your TV dock. Despite the lower resolution, the image quality may still be acceptable for GameChat purposes.
Interestingly, Nintendo has stated that any compatible USB-C camera should work with the Switch 2, opening doors to using existing webcams. However, they also caution that compatibility may vary, and a testing tool is integrated into the Switch 2’s settings to verify functionality. For guaranteed compatibility and peace of mind, Hori’s officially licensed cameras are a safe bet. So, for those seeking a budget-friendly and portable video solution for their Nintendo Switch 2, Hori’s new camera appears to be a compelling option.
