ChatGPT’s Deep Research Gets a Lightweight Makeover: More Accessible, More Affordable

OpenAI has just unveiled a more budget-friendly version of its powerful ChatGPT deep research tool. This ‘lightweight’ model is a game-changer, making advanced research capabilities available to a much wider audience.

Previously, access to deep research features within ChatGPT was primarily limited to paying subscribers. Now, even free users can experience the benefits, albeit with some limitations. The new lightweight model utilizes OpenAI’s o4-mini model, offering a surprisingly similar level of intelligence to its more resource-intensive predecessor. OpenAI claims the results are ‘shorter while maintaining the depth and quality you’ve come to expect,’ making it a practical solution for many research needs.

The cost savings for OpenAI are significant, as the company has previously revealed the substantial expense of processing user requests. This lightweight version represents a major step towards making AI-powered research more sustainable and accessible. The move is particularly noteworthy given OpenAI’s stated commitment to expanding access to its technology.

Free users can now enjoy five deep research tasks per month, while paid subscribers receive a generous increase in their monthly allowance. Team and Plus users will have a combined total of 25 tasks across both the original and lightweight versions, while Pro users get a substantial 250. Enterprise and Education users can expect access to the lightweight model with the same limits as Team and Plus users in the coming week. This tiered approach ensures that both free and paid users benefit from the improved accessibility and efficiency of the new model.

This launch marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI-driven research. By making its advanced tools more accessible and economically viable, OpenAI is paving the way for broader adoption and innovation across various fields.
