Marta’s Comeback: Brazil’s Legend Returns for Copa América Warm-ups

In a move that has sent ripples of excitement through the world of women’s football, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, Marta, has been recalled to the national team. This marks her first international call-up since the Olympic final last year, a testament to her enduring talent and influence on the team.

The 39-year-old star, widely considered one of the greatest female footballers ever, had previously announced her retirement from international play following the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, she’s clearly not ready to hang up her boots just yet. This exciting comeback comes as Brazil prepares to defend its Copa América title, and Marta’s inclusion is a significant boost to the team’s chances.

Coach Arthur Elias confirmed Marta’s return on Tuesday, highlighting her continued high level of play with her club, the Orlando Pride. He emphasized her importance not only for her on-field prowess but also for her mentorship of younger players, a crucial aspect of the team’s ongoing rejuvenation process. Elias stated that Marta’s recent successful season and contribution to her club’s championship win solidified her place in the squad.

Joining Marta in the squad are familiar faces like Angelina, Debinha, and Kerolin, while Elias is also keen on integrating promising young talent such as goalkeeper Claudia and defender Isa Haas, with a view to building a strong team for the 2027 World Cup. The coach expressed his ambitious goal to raise expectations for the women’s national team and elevate the sport in Brazil.

Brazil will face Japan in a pair of friendlies on May 30th and June 2nd, providing valuable preparation for the Copa América, which takes place in Ecuador from July 12th to August 2nd. The final squad for the tournament will be announced before a friendly against France on June 27th. Marta’s presence undoubtedly adds a layer of excitement and anticipation to Brazil’s Copa América campaign, reminding everyone of her enduring legacy in the sport.
