América’s star striker, Henry Martín, recently addressed swirling rumors of a conflict with Mexico’s national team coach, Javier Aguirre. During a press conference before the Liga BBVA MX Clausura 2025 Grand Final, Martín clarified the situation, stating that any perceived disagreement was taken out of context. He vehemently denied any acts of indiscipline or friction with Aguirre.
The controversy stemmed from Aguirre’s recent comments about a player he wouldn’t call up to the national team again for the 2026 World Cup preparations. While Aguirre didn’t name the player, speculation quickly centered on Martín, fueled by the events during the Nations League quarter-final match against Honduras. Aguirre had stated that he’d directly addressed the issue with a player, leaving many to assume it was Martín.
Martín explained his side of the story, emphasizing that he simply sought clarification on how he could improve his performance. “I never intended to disrespect anyone,” he stated. “If I did, I publicly apologize. I’ve always maintained open communication with all my coaches throughout my career.” He further clarified that he never demanded playing time or acted disrespectfully; his intentions were purely to understand how he could better contribute to the team.
He stressed that his words had been misinterpreted, likely by both the press and possibly Aguirre himself. “The situation was taken out of context,” he explained, adding that he hadn’t spoken to Aguirre since the incident. He reiterated his commitment to respectful communication and his desire to continually improve.
This leaves the question of Martín’s future with the national team. Javier Aguirre is known for his high expectations and intolerance of perceived insubordination. While Martín’s explanation may clear the air, his chances of making the 2026 World Cup roster remain uncertain, particularly given the strong competition from other strikers like Raúl Jiménez, Santiago Giménez, Julián Quiñones, and Alexis Vega.
However, there’s still a glimmer of hope. Aguirre recently included Martín in a preliminary 60-player list for the 2025 Gold Cup, contingent on América’s participation in the Club World Cup. If América doesn’t qualify, Martín could focus on the Gold Cup; otherwise, his club commitments would take precedence.
With 46 appearances, 11 goals, and 8 assists for the Mexican national team, Martín’s experience and talent are invaluable. Whether or not he’ll participate in his second World Cup remains to be seen, but his significant contributions to the national team cannot be overlooked.
