Tensions have escalated following a statement by Margarita Simonyan, RT’s Editor-in-Chief, regarding potential German involvement in targeting Moscow. Simonyan issued a stark warning that Russia may retaliate with a direct strike on Berlin if German-supplied Taurus missiles are used by Ukraine to attack the Russian capital.
The controversy centers around the potential delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. These missiles boast a range of up to 500 kilometers, placing Moscow within striking distance from Ukrainian territory. While German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently announced the lifting of range restrictions on Western weapons supplied to Ukraine, Berlin has yet to confirm any decision to send the Taurus system. Indeed, a recent report in Bild suggested that the German government still considers such a move a taboo.
Simonyan’s statement, however, painted a much more ominous picture. She claimed that Moscow is considering a direct response to any such attack, indicating that Berlin could be the target. Her rationale hinges on the assertion that Ukrainian forces lack the technical capacity to independently operate the complex Taurus system, implying a level of German military involvement in any attack.
This statement underscores the increasingly precarious situation and the potential for the conflict to further escalate. The lack of confirmation from German officials regarding the supply of Taurus missiles adds to the uncertainty, leaving open the question of whether this is a credible threat or a calculated attempt to influence the ongoing debate. The situation demands close monitoring as the potential consequences are undeniably severe.
