Former Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez is facing serious charges after a recent investigation uncovered an alleged illegal gambling operation that raked in millions. Lopez, who was elected in 2020, has been charged with racketeering and conspiracy, accusations that paint a stark contrast to his former role as the county’s top law enforcement official.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) alleges that Lopez personally profited handsomely from the scheme, pocketing an estimated $700,000. Furthermore, investigators claim he used campaign contributions to keep the operation running smoothly. FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass stated that Lopez’s actions violated the public trust and the high standards expected of a sheriff. The operation, based out of a business called the Fusion Social Club in Kissimmee, allegedly included slot machines, a lottery, and a full-fledged gambling house. Over the years, it generated more than $21.6 million in revenue, according to prosecutors.
Following his arrest, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis swiftly suspended Lopez and appointed Christopher Blackmon, a Florida Highway Patrol officer, as interim sheriff. Lopez pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on June 30th.
This isn’t just about Lopez. Four other individuals—Ying Zhang, Sharon Fedrick, Sheldon Wetherholt, and Carol Cote—face identical racketeering and conspiracy charges in connection with the alleged operation. The investigation itself does not implicate Osceola County itself.
