Roku, the popular streaming platform, is currently testing a redesigned homepage, promising a more streamlined and personalized viewing experience. This update focuses on making it easier for users to access their favorite apps and discover new content. A key feature of the new design is the addition of a ‘Quick Access’ section, which automatically populates with frequently used apps. This means Netflix fans will see Netflix prominently featured, and those who regularly delve into Roku’s action movie selection will find shortcuts to those titles. While currently there’s no manual customization for this section, Roku’s VP of viewer product, Preston Smalley, assures users that the company is exploring various options for user control based on customer feedback. Smalley emphasizes the goal of a seamless, out-of-the-box experience.
The redesign also simplifies navigation. Instead of landing on the left-hand sidebar, users now land directly within the main grid, with the sidebar conveniently tucked away until needed. Key features like ‘Live TV’ and ‘Featured Free’ have been moved to the main grid for improved visibility. Smalley explains this change aims to increase user discovery of Roku’s diverse content offerings. The new layout also introduces a ‘Subscriptions’ section for easy access to all subscribed content, and a revamped ‘For You’ section (formerly ‘What to Watch’) providing personalized recommendations. A new ‘What are you in the mood for?’ section allows browsing by genre, making it easy to find the perfect show or movie.
While Roku has experimented with different ad placements recently, the number and types of ads remain unchanged in this redesign. The large marquee ad stays put, but two other ad placements have been moved. Roku emphasizes that this redesign is about intuitive navigation and a more personalized experience, not increased advertising. The company is actively gathering user feedback before a wider rollout, and users participating in the test will be able to opt out if they prefer.
The updated homepage is a significant step towards enhancing user experience and making content discovery more seamless. While the final version might differ slightly based on feedback, this sneak peek reveals Roku’s commitment to providing a more intuitive and enjoyable streaming experience.
