Anker Innovations, a popular electronics company, has issued a recall for over 1.1 million of its PowerCore 10000 portable chargers. The recall, announced in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is due to reports of fires and explosions stemming from overheating lithium-ion batteries within the affected devices.
The CPSC notice highlights 19 reported incidents, including two cases of minor burn injuries and significant property damage totaling over $60,700. Anker itself has stated that the recall is a precautionary measure to prioritize customer safety. The recalled chargers, model number A1263, were sold online through various retailers including Anker’s website, Amazon, eBay, and Newegg, between June 2016 and December 2022.
If you own a PowerCore 10000 power bank, you can check if it’s part of the recall by visiting Anker’s website and verifying your device’s serial number. Anker is offering a free replacement for all affected units. To receive a replacement, you’ll need to provide a photo of your power bank clearly showing the model and serial numbers, along with your name and the date. Importantly, the word “recalled” should also be visible in the photo.
It’s crucial to immediately stop using any recalled power bank. Do not attempt to dispose of the faulty device in your regular trash or recycling bin. Lithium-ion batteries pose a significant fire risk if improperly disposed of; therefore, you must follow local guidelines for safe battery disposal.
This recall serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are prevalent in many electronic devices. The National Fire Protection Association advises consumers to discontinue use of any product containing lithium-ion batteries if they notice any unusual signs, such as unusual odors, color changes, excessive heat, shape changes, leaking, or strange noises. Staying vigilant and taking appropriate action when these signs appear is key to preventing accidents.
Anker’s proactive response to this issue underscores the importance of product safety and responsible recall procedures. By taking swift action and providing a straightforward replacement process, Anker aims to minimize any further risk to its customers. Remember to check your power bank and take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and protect your property.
