Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directly addressed former US President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding India’s relationship with Russia, characterizing the US-India partnership as ‘very positive and forward-looking.’ This comes after Trump expressed disappointment over India’s oil purchases from Russia, even mentioning a 50% tariff imposed on Indian goods. He also stated, despite his concerns, that he would ‘always be friends’ with Modi.
Modi’s swift response, shared on social media, emphasized the strong and comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the US. This public show of support for the relationship counters Trump’s more critical statements. Trump’s remarks were made during a White House press conference where he was questioned about India’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit alongside Russia and China. He suggested that the US might have ‘lost’ India and Russia to China, a statement he later softened.
Trump’s comments echo previous criticism from senior US officials, including White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro, who accused India of ‘profiteering’ from the situation in Ukraine by purchasing Russian oil. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also issued warnings, hinting at further tariffs if India didn’t align more closely with US interests and suggesting that India would ultimately seek a trade deal with Trump. The 50% tariff on Indian goods, initially a 25% tariff increased due to the oil purchases, highlights the tension between the two nations.
The exchange underscores the complexities of the US-India relationship, particularly concerning India’s balancing act between its strategic partnership with the US and its long-standing ties with Russia. Modi’s assertive response, however, clearly aims to reaffirm India’s commitment to its relationship with the US, despite the ongoing pressure and criticisms.
