It looks like Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform, is experiencing some technical difficulties. This morning, I noticed my following feed wasn’t updating with posts newer than two hours old. This is unusual, given the number of accounts I follow and their generally high activity level. Something clearly wasn’t right.
I attempted to share one of my own articles, and while it seemed to post successfully on my profile page, clicking the link to the post resulted in a ‘not found’ error. This isn’t just a problem on my end; Down Detector shows a significant spike in reported issues over the past couple of hours, suggesting a wider outage. A colleague has also reported seeing similar problems, with only older posts appearing in their feed, while another received an error message about the feed server. Bluesky’s own status page, however, doesn’t currently acknowledge any issues.
The situation highlights the inherent challenges of maintaining a large-scale, decentralized social network. While the promise of Bluesky is a more user-centric and censorship-resistant platform, these outages serve as a reminder that such systems are not immune to technical hiccups. The experience underscores the trade-offs between decentralization and the seamless functionality users expect from established platforms. It will be interesting to see how quickly Bluesky addresses and resolves this issue, and what measures they take to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The screenshots below illustrate the problems I encountered. [Insert Screenshots Here]
For now, it seems Bluesky users will have to exercise patience and hope for a speedy resolution. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and update this post as more information becomes available.
