Oops! Universal Leaks Title of Next Mario Movie

Universal Pictures may have accidentally revealed the title of the highly anticipated sequel to *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*. A press release briefly listed *Super Mario World* as an upcoming film slated for Peacock streaming after its theatrical run. However, the mention was swiftly removed, along with references to other films like *Shrek* and *Minions*, raising eyebrows and fueling speculation.

The leaked title isn’t entirely surprising. The first film’s post-credits scene teased the arrival of Yoshi, Mario’s iconic dinosaur companion, whose debut in the video game world was precisely in *Super Mario World*, a 1990 SNES classic that sold over 20 million copies. This connection makes the title a logical progression for the franchise.

The initial announcement, showcasing NBCUniversal’s upcoming content slate, has since been altered, leaving fans to wonder if this was a genuine slip-up or a cleverly orchestrated marketing campaign. Regardless, the internet has already been buzzing with excitement. The sequel, announced in March 2024, is set to hit theaters on April 3rd, 2026, with the original film’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, returning to helm the project. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are also expected to reprise their roles as Mario and Luigi, respectively.

This news comes on the heels of Nintendo’s burgeoning entertainment empire. The success of *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide, has given the company the green light to expand into more film adaptations. A live-action *Legend of Zelda* movie is also in the works, with a planned release date in March 2027. The future certainly looks bright for Nintendo fans, with more exciting movie adaptations on the horizon.
