Collier Shines, Bueckers Debuts: Lynx Triumph in WNBA Season Opener

The WNBA season tipped off with a highly anticipated matchup between two UConn legends: Napheesa Collier and Paige Bueckers. Collier, playing for the Minnesota Lynx, delivered a dominant performance, scoring 34 points – tying a Lynx franchise record for points in a season opener – to lead her team to a convincing 99-84 victory over Bueckers’ Dallas Wings. Courtney Williams also contributed significantly for the Lynx, adding 25 points and 9 assists to the winning effort.

Bueckers, making her highly publicized WNBA debut, showcased her talent with 10 points and 7 rebounds. While the loss wasn’t the outcome she hoped for, Bueckers maintained a positive outlook, emphasizing the importance of using the game as a foundation for future improvement. She also noted the friendly rivalry between herself and Collier, acknowledging their shared UConn history and competitive spirit.

The game saw Collier explode for 18 points in the third quarter alone, turning a close contest into a comfortable lead for the Lynx. The Wings appeared to tire in the latter stages of the match, contributing to the Lynx’s decisive win.

Adding a unique touch to the evening, Bueckers’ hometown of Hopkins, Minnesota, temporarily changed its name to “Paige Bueckers, Minnesota” to celebrate her professional debut. This gesture highlights the excitement surrounding Bueckers’ entry into the WNBA and the strong local support she enjoys.

The two former Huskies will have another opportunity to face off on Wednesday when the Wings travel to Minneapolis for a rematch just miles from Bueckers’ hometown. The rivalry continues, promising more exciting clashes between these two talented players throughout the season. Collier, already considered an early MVP candidate, expressed her focus on a championship rather than individual accolades, highlighting the team’s collective ambition for the upcoming season.
