Almada’s Hot Seat: Cruz Azul and Boca Juniors Vie for Uruguayan Manager

While Guillermo Almada continues coaching Pachuca for the Club World Cup, rumors of his departure have sparked a fierce bidding war between two football giants: Cruz Azul and Boca Juniors. Both clubs are reportedly vying for the services of the highly sought-after Uruguayan manager.

According to reports from Argentina’s Diario Olé, Almada is a backup plan for Boca Juniors should negotiations with their preferred candidate, Miguel Ángel Russo, fall through. The Argentine publication highlighted the possibility of Almada’s move, suggesting that while Pachuca’s financial demands might seem steep, everything is negotiable.

A source cited by Diario Olé indicated that Almada’s potential departure from Pachuca could be attributed to both career opportunities and a growing rift with the team. This tension, seemingly unrelated to the upcoming Club World Cup, allegedly stems from a disagreement with club owner Jesús Martínez. Further fueling the speculation, reports suggest player discontent with Almada’s strict training regimen, including a lack of post-season vacation, contributed to the tension.

Adding to the complexity, rumors suggest that Almada’s displeasure with the club’s acquisition of Brazilian forward Kennedy, without prior consultation, further strained his relationship with the Pachuca management. Ironically, Kennedy has proven to be a productive player, scoring nine goals—just three less than the league’s top scorer.

Pachuca, however, has publicly addressed the situation, stating that Almada is under contract and that any interested club would need to pay his substantial $4 million release clause.

Meanwhile, Cruz Azul, who have openly expressed their interest in Almada, are also in the running. The club reportedly informed their current manager, Vicente Sánchez, that his contract will not be renewed following their disappointing semi-final exit against Club América in the Concachampions. This decision has further fueled speculation about a potential deal with Almada.

The coming days will determine which team, if either, manages to secure Almada’s signature, provided he does indeed leave Pachuca. The competition for his services is intense, promising a fascinating conclusion to this transfer saga.
