Boulder Attack: Molotov Cocktails, Hate, and a March for Hostages

On Sunday, a horrific attack unfolded in Boulder, Colorado, leaving eight people injured. The incident, which occurred during a peaceful demonstration supporting Israeli hostages held in Gaza, is being investigated as a targeted act of terrorism by the FBI. A suspect, 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, has been apprehended and faces multiple felony charges, including a federal hate crime charge.

The attack took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Pearl Street Mall, near the County Courthouse. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect utilize a makeshift flamethrower and Molotov cocktails, inflicting burns on several demonstrators who were participating in a weekly march organized by ‘Run for Their Lives,’ a group advocating for the release of the Israeli hostages. The victims ranged in age from 52 to 88, with one victim, an 88-year-old Holocaust refugee, hospitalized in critical condition. Colorado Governor Jared Polis condemned the attack, describing it as a heinous and targeted act against the Jewish community.

Soliman, an Egyptian national who arrived in the U.S. in August 2022, allegedly shouted “Free Palestine” and “End Zionist” during the attack, according to witnesses. An affidavit filed by the Department of Justice reveals Soliman admitted to researching Molotov cocktail construction on YouTube, purchasing the necessary materials, and building the devices. He also reportedly expressed a desire to kill all Zionist people. Soliman’s immigration status is currently under scrutiny; while he filed for asylum in September 2022, details regarding the outcome remain undisclosed. He was employed at a medical clinic and also worked as an Uber driver, undergoing background checks for both positions.

The attack has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. FBI Director Kash Patel, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, and National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard have all referred to the incident as a terrorist attack. The incident raises serious concerns about security protocols and the potential for further targeted attacks against the Jewish community. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The eight victims remain under medical care, with varying degrees of injuries. The community grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures and a renewed focus on combating hate-motivated violence.
