Piojo Herrera’s Rocky Start with Costa Rica: Will He Survive?

Miguel “Piojo” Herrera’s tenure as coach of the Costa Rican national team has gotten off to a less-than-stellar start. Two disappointing draws against Nicaragua (1-1) and Haiti (3-3) have not only complicated Costa Rica’s path to the 2026 World Cup but have also sparked considerable unrest among fans and put Herrera’s position under scrutiny.

The discontent was palpable during recent matches, with chants of “¡Fuera Piojo!” (Piojo out!) echoing through the Estadio Nacional. However, the Costa Rican Football Federation (FCRF) appears to be standing by their man for now. FCRF president Osael Maroto has publicly stated that Herrera’s job is not currently in jeopardy.

Maroto acknowledged concerns within the executive committee following the team’s underwhelming performance, revealing a meeting with Herrera on September 15th to address the situation. While expressing worry and a keen focus on the national team’s performance, Maroto emphasized the federation’s continued belief in Herrera’s abilities. He highlighted the initial optimism surrounding Herrera’s appointment and stated that the recent draws, while disappointing, don’t warrant his immediate dismissal. The federation believes that Costa Rica still has a chance to qualify and that changing coaches at this juncture is not the optimal solution.

The uncertainty extends beyond Herrera’s future, impacting potential player selections as well. When asked about the possibility of bringing back experienced players like Celso Borges or Kendall Waston, Maroto deferred to Herrera’s decision-making process.

Despite the unwavering institutional support, doubts remain among fans. However, with the World Cup qualifying rounds still underway and opportunities for improvement, Herrera has a chance to turn things around and prove that his appointment can ultimately lead Costa Rica to success in 2026.
