Major League Soccer Shakeup: Utah Royals and Real Salt Lake Sold for $600 Million!

The sports world is buzzing after the announcement that the Larry H. Miller Family, in conjunction with Miller Sports & Entertainment, has acquired a controlling interest in Real Salt Lake (RSL) and the Utah Royals FC. This significant deal, reportedly valued at $600 million, marks a major shift in ownership for both Major League Soccer (MLS) and National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) teams.

The acquisition includes not only the RSL and Utah Royals, but also the Real Monarchs (MLS Next Pro), the RSL Academy, America First Field, Zions Bank Stadium, and the Zions Bank Training Center. David Blitzer will retain a minority stake, while Ryan Smith has sold his share in Real Salt Lake Holdings.

This isn’t the Miller family’s first foray into sports ownership; they famously owned the NBA’s Utah Jazz from 1985 to 2020. Steve Starks, CEO of the Larry H. Miller Company, expressed excitement about this new venture, emphasizing their commitment to building strong community ties and championship-caliber teams.

Blitzer also commented on the sale, highlighting his enthusiasm for collaborating with the Millers and his shared goal of bringing championships to Utah. He praised the Millers’ high ethical standards and their commitment to community involvement and responsible business practices.

The sale price reflects the rapidly increasing value of NWSL teams. The acquisition of the Royals, along with their existing stadium and training facilities, represents a significant investment, exceeding previous expansion fees paid by other NWSL teams. This underscores the growing popularity and financial potential of women’s professional soccer.

Both MLS Commissioner Don Garber and NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman expressed their support for the new ownership group, emphasizing their confidence in the Millers’ and Blitzer’s ability to strengthen the clubs and expand the reach of soccer in Utah and beyond. Steve Miller will serve as chairman and governor for both RSL and the Utah Royals, further solidifying the family’s commitment to the future success of both teams.

This significant investment signals a bright future for both Real Salt Lake and the Utah Royals, promising exciting developments for fans and the broader soccer community.
