The decentralized social network Bluesky is rolling out its own version of verified accounts, using blue checks to signify authenticity and notability. This move comes as Bluesky experiences significant growth and grapples with an increasing number of impersonators. The platform announced the initiative on Monday, stating that they will proactively verify accounts deemed authentic and notable, granting them a blue checkmark within a circle. This differs from the existing self-verification system that allows users to link a domain to their username. The new system should offer a simpler verification process for independent journalists and creators who may not have access to a personal domain.
In addition to verifying individual accounts, Bluesky is also introducing “Trusted Verifier” status for select organizations. This allows organizations like *The New York Times* to verify users affiliated with them, adding another layer of accountability. These verified accounts will have a slightly different checkmark—a scalloped circle instead of a rounded one. Bluesky’s moderation team will review all verifications to ensure authenticity. The distinction between individual and organization verification is clearly visible thanks to the different checkmark designs.
While users can’t yet apply for verification, Bluesky plans to open up requests once the system is stable and they’ve received user feedback. The platform has indicated that the verification status of a user will be clearly visible by selecting the blue checkmark, allowing users to see which organization, if any, verified the account. For users who prefer not to display their verification status, Bluesky offers the option to hide it in the app’s settings.
This new verification system builds upon Bluesky’s existing features and aims to improve user experience by combating impersonation and providing a clearer indication of authenticity. It’s a significant step for the platform as it navigates its rapid growth and establishes its identity in the increasingly competitive social media landscape.
