Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear: key players, including the in-form Bukayo Saka, will not be rested in upcoming Premier League matches. This decision comes as Arsenal prepares for a crucial Champions League semifinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain, a fixture that holds the promise of the club’s first-ever Champions League title. Their recent 5-1 aggregate victory over Real Madrid in the quarterfinals has ignited hopes of a historic triumph.
However, the Gunners’ European success hasn’t translated to domestic dominance. They currently trail league leaders Liverpool by a significant 13 points with only five games remaining. A loss to Crystal Palace on Wednesday could even see Liverpool clinch the title. Despite the seemingly insurmountable gap in the Premier League standings, Arteta remains steadfast in his decision to prioritize player fitness and rhythm over rest, especially for Saka, who recently returned from a three-month injury layoff.
“We cannot think in those terms,” Arteta stated in a news conference. “When the players are fit and available and want to play, they have to play. They are at their best when they are playing consistently.” He clarified that this strategy hinges on players being in peak physical and emotional condition. If a player is unfit, they will not play, but fitness will be the deciding factor.
Saka’s contributions this season have been undeniable, with 25 goal contributions in 30 appearances across all competitions. His standout performances, including a key role in Arsenal’s 2-1 win at the Bernabéu and a strong showing in their 4-0 victory over Ipswich Town, further solidify Arteta’s confidence in his decision. The Ipswich match saw Saka endure a significant challenge that resulted in a red card for the opposing player, Leif Davis, but Arteta assures fans that Saka’s fitness is not a major concern. “We have to wait and see how he reacts after the training session, but it’s nothing too serious,” he commented. Arteta added that if Saka is fit, he’ll likely be involved in the Crystal Palace match.
In contrast to Saka’s situation, Arteta’s prognosis for Jorginho is less optimistic. The Italian midfielder, who sustained a suspected rib injury earlier this month against Brentford, is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. Arteta expressed uncertainty regarding Jorginho’s return this season, highlighting the contrast in the manager’s approach to player management depending on individual circumstances and the importance of maintaining peak performance in key players like Saka.
This calculated risk by Arteta raises questions. Is prioritising Champions League glory over a realistically unattainable Premier League title the right approach? Only time will tell if this gamble pays off for Arsenal.
