Cold Case Solved: Divorce Attorney Arrested for 2013 Murder of Client

Twelve years after Aliza Sherman, a 53-year-old nurse and mother of four, was brutally stabbed to death outside her divorce attorney’s office in downtown Cleveland, a significant breakthrough has been made in the case. Gregory Moore, her former attorney, has been arrested and indicted on multiple charges, including aggravated murder and conspiracy.

The 2013 murder of Aliza Sherman was a cold case that haunted investigators for over a decade. Security footage showed a hooded figure fleeing the scene, but the individual’s identity remained a mystery until now. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations, spurred in part by NBC’s “Dateline” featuring the case, reopened the investigation in 2021, leading to this significant development.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley stated that through the tireless efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, substantial evidence has been gathered, directly implicating Gregory Moore in the orchestration and execution of Sherman’s murder. The indictment alleges that Moore orchestrated the killing to prevent Sherman’s upcoming divorce trial, scheduled for the day after her death.

According to the indictment, Moore contacted Sherman on the day of the murder, arranging a meeting at his office and requesting updates on her departure. While she waited outside, she was attacked and stabbed more than ten times. The indictment further alleges that Moore’s communication with Sherman before and after the attack was an attempt to create a false alibi. The prosecution also notes that at the time of the murder, Moore was under investigation for sending bomb threats to the courthouse, a tactic he allegedly used to avoid court appearances in other cases.

In 2017, Moore pleaded guilty to inducing panic and falsification related to the bomb threats and his misleading statements during the initial investigation into Sherman’s death. Now, with the new indictment, he faces far more serious consequences for his alleged actions. Moore’s arraignment is scheduled for a later date at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. It remains to be seen if he has retained legal representation.

This arrest brings a long-awaited measure of closure to the Sherman family, who have endured years of uncertainty and grief. The dedication of law enforcement and the persistence of those who fought for justice have finally brought a suspect to account for this heinous crime. The details of the case are still emerging, but the arrest marks a significant turning point in this long-unsolved mystery.
